ABOUT US
We are a Youth Development Programme breaking the cycle of poverty through educating youth
At Ignition, we are driven by a passionate commitment to empower South African youth for a brighter future. As a comprehensive youth development initiative, working in Alexandra, we focus on addressing the inequalities and disparities experienced by young individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. We help them build the skills and character needed to transcend their circumstances and to succeed in their tertiary education, their careers and in life in general.
WHAT DRIVES US
Alexandra
We are an organisation with a dedicated focus on Alexandra Township, situated just outside Sandton, Johannesburg. Alex is known for its high poverty rates, population density, and crime prevalence. Each year, we carefully select a cohort of 25 to 30 youth from Alex. These young individuals come from profoundly challenging socio-economic backgrounds, often navigating conditions of food insecurity, residing in single-parent households, and confronting various hurdles in their educational journeys. We build a community of students, from the same background, who understand each others challenges.
Broadening access and giving opportunity
“It was not lack of ability that limited my people, but lack of opportunity” Nelson Mandela. We believe in the inherent potential of every child, and their right to equal opportunities. We provide youth from a wider range of academic abilities, the opportunity to succeed in tertiary studies and in careers. We support youth with the right character, resilience, determination, and eagerness to succeed.
Growth mindset
We encourage growth in the individual’s potential, by building hard skills, coaching towards goal achievement, growing character to ignite their dreams.
Success
Success for us is seeing youth graduate, build successful careers, and establish themselves as independent, financially stable, and contributing members of South African society. Finally, success is changing the trajectory of life, for future generations.
