Neo Sibiya

Honours in Economics & Econometrics, Construction Economist

Growing up in Alexandra with his mother and eight other family members, including a great-grandmother, aunts, and cousins, Neo faced the challenges of a crowded household. He broke new ground as the first member of his family to venture into higher education.Neo graduated from high school in Alexandra in 2014 and, under the guidance of Ignition, set his sights on a degree in economics and econometrics at the University of Johannesburg in 2015. The transition from high school to university presented unexpected challenges.

Neo recalls, “What a jump it was. I had no idea it would be that difficult! But I put my head down and worked as hard as I could. It all went well.” Until it didn’t. Neo faced a significant setback when he failed a test, receiving a mere 26%. It was a shock to his system. “I had never failed anything, ever. I started to doubt my ability to pass at university.”

Neo needed to regroup, and this is where Ignition played a pivotal role. His mentor, Garth, provided unwavering support, and together, they worked through the situation. Neo’s confidence was gradually restored. “I worked even harder and basically put my life on hold in order to pass. And I did,” he says proudly.

Recalling advice he received as a school boy – “You may not start off well, but finish strong” – Neo held this wisdom close to his heart and made it his mantra. Not only did he pass his degree but graduated Cum Laude and went on to complete his Honours in Economics.

He joined Standard Bank immediately upon graduation and as of 2023 is a Construction Economist at S&P, covering the Middle East and Africa markets. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Neo has a passion for exploration. He recently embarked on a five-day hiking adventure through the challenging terrain of the Fish River Canyon, demonstrating his determination and adventurous spirit.
